Baby Masai Giraffe Born at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park on September 22nd, 2020
Hi everyone!
Disney announced today that a female giraffe was born on September 22nd, 2020 at Disney’s Animal Kingdom park. She is a third-generation Masai giraffe at the park and the 35th giraffe born between Disney’s Animal Kingdom park and Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge. I had posted a review of The Magic of Disney’s Animal Kingdom docuseries – it starts today – and you’ll see a variety of different animals on it, including the magnificent giraffes. Disney’s Animal Kingdom park also has three pregnant rhinos, with one due to give birth in October.
The calf does not yet have a name and weighed 156 pounds at birth! We should see the new giraffe out on the savanna in the coming months, the twelfth member of the herd on Kilimanjaro Safaris. Disney also provided video to share of the newborn.
In Episode 1 of Magic of Disney’s Animal Kingdom, you’ll see her grandma Kenya having a hoof trimming procedure (I previewed that episode a couple of weeks ago). And her mom Mara gave birth to her first calf Jabari in early 2019. We love seeing the baby animals out on the Kilimanjaro Safaris!
From Disney: This birth marks the second successful pairing of Mara and the calf’s dad George through the Species Survival Plan (SSP), which ensures the responsible breeding of endangered species.
