Blu-ray Review: “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell no Tales”

Hi everyone!

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales releases on October 3rd on 4K Ultra HD™/Blu-ray™ Combo Pack, it is already out on digital. This is one of a few movies this year that I didn’t have a chance to review ahead due to being out of town, so I am reviewing both the film and the Blu-ray in one shot. The press release is also below.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is the fifth entry in the franchise. While I don’t think it is the weakest of the four, I would say I would rank it 4th after the first 3 films. The official synopsis:

Thrust into an all-new adventure, a down-on-his-luck Capt. Jack Sparrow feels the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost sailors led by his old nemesis, the evil Capt. Salazar, escape from the Devil’s Triangle. Jack’s only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, but to find it, he must forge an uneasy alliance with a brilliant and beautiful astronomer and a headstrong young man in the British navy.

In the synopsis above, it mentions the “beautiful astronomer” who is named Carina Smyth (Kaya Scodelario), a new character in the film who is not so much referred to as an astronomer but as a horologist – and that ends up being a running gag in the film. It made me laugh a few times when something was supposed to be the focus while filming – like a journal – but it ended up being her chest instead. Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow mostly walked around the film drunk, though I kept wondering where he was getting the rum from – especially when he was tied up. Suspending disbelief isn’t my strong suit.

Javier Bardem is one of the stronger aspects of the movie even though I didn’t care as much about the ghost pirate aspect of the film. One of my favorite scenes was also one I had seen a preview of, the bank scene at the beginning. And actually, another of my favorite parts of the film was Paul McCartney as a pirate, and the bonus feature called “Wings over the Caribbean” is great and worth having the Blu-ray for. Honestly, I overall prefer the bonus features to the film, it was fun also seeing Johnny Depp bring a guitar with him to the film set. Depp also was portrayed younger in the film with technology that turned back the years, but while he looked like a younger version of his older self, I didn’t think he looked much like his 21 Jump Street days. It is still a cool effect. Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley are in the film briefly as well.

Here is a trailer for the film.

For the movie, I grade it a C -, it was just okay for me. The bonus features I give an A-, I thought those were a lot of fun.
