“Captain America: Civil War” Press Conferences Bring Out Team Cap and Team Iron Man Actors & Filmmakers (w/Full Video)

We were invited to the Captain America: Civil War press conference in West Hollywood, California on April 10th, 2016. The panels were split into two groups: Team Captain America and Team Iron Man.

Team Captain America consisted of Chris Evans (Steve Rogers/Captain America); Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier); Anthony Mackie (Sam Wilson/Falcon); Jeremy Renner (Clint Baron/Hawkeye); Elizabeth Olsen (Wanda Maximoff/Scarlett Witch); Paul Rudd (Scott Lang/Ant Man), director Joe Russo and producer Kevin Feige.

Team Iron Man included Feige again, along with Robert Downey Jr. (Tony Stark/Iron Man); Don Cheadle (James Rhodes/War Machine); Chadwick Boseman (T’Challa/Black Panther); Paul Bettany (Vision); Emily Van Camp (Sharon Carter/Agent 13) and director Anthony Russo.

Captain America: Civil War opens on May 6th, 2016 and is already breaking records with glowing reviews. We have full video of each panel, where the actors and filmmakers talked about the film. The actors seem very close, most having worked together before.

At the Team Captain America panel, Evans was asked if he felt any responsibility for a film where the first two words were “Captain America”. He said, “There’s pressure, but I don’t think it’s any more pressure to be honest than what the Russo’s or Marvel…movies live and die based on the directors and producers. We’ve all seen phenomenal actors and great scripts that still didn’t come to fruition in a good way…unless you have quality storytellers, you may fall on your face”.

Elizabeth Olsen shared that it could be difficult to keep up with the men when they ran, as they were fast and “I’m in heels and a corset”. She wanted everyone to slow down, “but I didn’t get that” (to much laughter in the room).

Director Joe Russo said that action was very important, but it was just as integral to the film to have a story and that each character moved forward.

Over at Team Iron Man, Robert Downey Jr. made the room laugh when he said, “I’m still reeling from the fact that Paul Bettany was Jarvis and now he’s Vision”.

Director Russo said of Downey Jr. that he was “incredibly generous in going through the process” in working with the new Spider-Man actor Tom Holland, who is also a younger Spider-Man than we’ve seen before. Not only did Downey Jr. help figure out who should be cast in the role, but he worked with Tom and helped pull out the best performance from him. Producer Kevin Feige had asked Robert Downey Jr. if he could read with the five finalists, and he did. They both were really appreciative of that. Much of the discussion centered about Downey’s Iron Man character.

Emily Van Camp was asked if she’d want to do more physical action in films (“kick ass”), and Van Camp said yes.  But she also said that “what is great about these films is that you are also developing these characters over time” and she liked “sharing with the audience” as well as opposed just to the physical part.
