Dining Reviews

Mickey’s Backyard BBQ Review, Fort Wilderness (Halloween Night 2011)

Originally our plan was to enjoy dinner at Trails End after the Fort Wilderness Halloween Golf Cart Parade last week, but our Cast Member friends had a discount at Mickey's Backyard BBQ and invited us to join them. The price was similar to Trails End with the discount, so we jumped on the offer!

It had been over 10 years since I went to Mickey's Backyard BBQ, and this was Jeff's first time. My one visit was in 1999, just after Mickey's Backyard BBQ had debuted. I was actually disappointed at the time, I went for my birthday and found it lacking compared with Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue and the 1990's version of the Polynesian Resort Luau.

We'd read online that the characters would be dressed for Halloween at the 5:00 P.M. show, but maybe not later (our show was at 7:00 P.M.). That wasn't the case, as Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Pluto, Chip and Dale were all in costume!

We arrived a little late, after the Halloween Golf Cart Parade had ended. The party was in full swing, with food out and characters dancing with guests. Mickey and Minnie were dressed in harvest outfits, greeting guests at the entrance. The band was dressed in Halloween outfits, singing songs such as "Monster Mash", on a stage decorated with skulls and pumpkins. * It is recommended that guests arrive early, and to allow extra time for transportation from the parks and resorts.

The food ranged from average to very good – my favorite item was probably the garden salad. The potato salad, cornbread, smoked chicken and ribs were all favorites at our table. Jeff and I both thought that the corn was just so-so, and I wasn't a big fan of the baked bean dish – Jeff liked it, but thought the beans were chili. The hamburgers were surprisingly tasty, I had been hesitant to try one (the quality isn't what I'm used to serving from the grill at home, but still good). We didn't try the hot dogs.

Wine and beer are included, I thought the wine pour was generous (and both beer and wine were unlimited). The only other beverages included are lemonade and iced tea.
