Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Refurbishment Update at Magic Kingdom – January 10, 2025

Hi everyone!

We have a Big Thunder Mountain Railroad refurbishment update to share from the Magic Kingdom! The attraction closed on January 6th, 2025 and work started right away – track is already being removed from the attraction. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is scheduled to be closed into 2026. I rode the Liberty Belle twice yesterday for photos and video.

Here is our video, followed by photos.

A large crane was placed here even before the attraction closed earlier this week. We did have a couple of final rides last weekend.

The crane towers high above Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.

Big Thunder Mountain is closed for major refurbishment and Disney says that there will be “a little big of new magic” when it reopens in 2026.

There were workers walking the tracks yesterday.

I noticed that there wasn’t any track as we approached this area.

Here is a look in photos at track that has been removed.

In a different location, workers were walking the track during my first ride on the Liberty Belle.

The front of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is walled off to guests.

A sign on the attraction says that Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is closed until further notice by the order of Barnabus T. Bullion, founder and president of Big Thunder Mining Co. Questions or concerns may be addressed to interim foreman (they spell it forman) “U.B. Patient”.

We also have a video of two rides on Big Thunder Mountain from last weekend.

At some point, the Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island will close (no date has been announced) for an upcoming Cars themed area. There is also a Villains Land that will be built.

I expect to be back at the Magic Kingdom in the coming days, and we’ll take another look at Big Thunder Mountain Railroad!
