Cotton-Top Tamarin Triplets Born at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park

Hi everyone!

Cotton-top tamarin triplets have been born this morning at Disney’s Animal Kingdom! The babies are now bonding with their parents and siblings at the park. We stopped to see the cotton-top tamarins just last week, and look forward to stopping by to see the triplets in the near future.

We’re welcoming another bundle of tiny, critically endangered cotton-top tamarin triplets

Born this Saturday morning, the babies are bonding with their parents and siblings on Discovery Island at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. In fact, both mom and dad share infant care responsibilities, carrying their young on their backs until approximately 14 weeks of age.

Weighing just one pound as an adult, this pint-sized primate can leap 15 feet from a stationary branch.  In the wild, cotton-top tamarins are found only in the tropical forests of northwestern Colombia in South America, where they live high in the treetops and forage for fruits and insects, making up most of their diet. The tiny-but-mighty cotton-top tamarins are known for the wild manes of bright-white hair atop their heads and have amazing athletic abilities.

The birth of these critically endangered primates is just one example of how Disney’s Animal Kingdom works with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan to help ensure the responsible breeding of critically endangered species in managed care and help create healthy and genetically diverse populations of animals for years to come.

Disney has also worked with organizations, such as Proyecto Titi in Colombia, to help protect this critically endangered species. As a part of Disney Planet Possible—a commitment to creating a happier, healthier planet for all—the Disney Conservation Fund has supported Proyecto Tití’s efforts.
