My Experience Making an Ostrich Egg Holiday Ornament at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge

Hi everyone!

I was invited yesterday to take part in an activity that is available to guests visiting Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge for all of December – decorating an ornament with ostrich eggs. The eggs are laid by ostriches at the resort and at Disney’s Animal Kingdom park. They are unfertilized and go unused by the female ostriches. The eggs are then crushed and dyed to be used for ornaments. This is a holiday activity that has been available to guests for years at the resort!

First, Cast Member Claire told us about the ostrich eggs and shared examples of completed ornaments.

The ornament activity is free but a $5.00 donation is suggested for the Disney Conservation Fund.

A paper card with an animal drawing is given out, and a mosaic of egg shells is placed with glue.

We went down to Simba’s Clubhouse to make our own ornament. It used to be that Simba’s Clubhouse was an activity center for kids, but now it is a recreation area for all ages.

Here is a look at the entrance.

Tables are set up for making ostrich egg ornaments. There are other arts and craft activities that guests can also make for a small fee.

We received a tray of egg shells that were dyed in different colors. Also included is recycled telephone wire (something I made bracelets with as a kid) for tying the ornament on a tree. We received beads to decorate the ornament wire.

I chose a zebra.

We were given glue and a paintbrush to add the eggshells to the ornament.

I didn’t completely cover the zebra so to show what type of animal it was (other animals, like an elephant or turtle can be completely covered and easy to identify). I enjoyed mixing the colors up a bit.

There is a board that advertises various crafts that guests can choose from, including other holiday offerings.

There are two big chairs near a TV that was playing “Toy Story 3” at the time.

Simba, Pumbaa and Timon are in artwork on the wall.

While I made my ornament in Jambo House at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge, there is also a location in Kidani Village.

The hours to make an ostrich egg ornament at Jambo House are from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Kidani Village from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. until December 31st, 2022.

And while you are at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge, check out the holiday decorations! I especially love the big Christmas tree in the lobby of Jambo House.
