10 Disney Books I Am Looking Forward to in the Second Half of 2018, Including “Walt Disney’s Disneyland” and “The Disney Christmas Card”

Hi everyone!

There are quite a few Disney books I am looking forward in the second half of 2018. These are my top 10, I am not putting these in order of date but more the order of interest to me. Also, street dates on books change often and sometimes books get pulled altogether. I will revise the list as needed, and add if anything else interesting pops up! I haven’t yet added a third TASCHEN book The Star Wars Archives: 1977-1983, but may when I update this article in the future. All books are Amazon affiliate links.

Here is my top 10!

Walt Disney’s Disneyland by Chris Nichols is from TASCHEN. It looks a little smaller for a TASCHEN book but with a very reasonable price.

The current street date is September 12, 2018.

They Drew As They Pleased Vol 4: The Hidden Art of Disney’s Mid-Century Era: The 1950s and 1960s is by Didier Ghez is one I can’t wait to read, his third book in the series last year was one of my favorite books of 2017. And mid-century is such a popular topic right now, so it’s the perfect time for this book. Officially, the book “includes never-before-seen images from Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, and Sleeping Beauty and discusses Disney’s first forays into television, commercials, space, and science projects—even the development of theme parks.”

August 7th, 2018 is the current street date.

Walt Disney’s Nine Old Men: Masters of Animation was just added to Amazon, “Celebrate the legacy of Disney’s core group of animators, with Walt Disney’s Nine Old Men: Masters of Animation, featuring original sketches from classic films such as Pinocchio, Bambi, and Peter Pan—including an exclusive look at the animators’ lives, with personal caricatures and fine artwork.”

The current street date is October 16, 2018.

Jeff Kurtti has several books out this year. One has already been released, Travels with Walt Disney: A Photographic Voyage Around the World, which I reviewed here. I will mention the other one later in the article. This one is From All of Us to All of You The Disney Christmas Card offers “a center gatefold cover opening, like Maps of the Disney Parks, and a dozen removable holiday cards, exclusively-designed as a unique bonus feature to showcase both rare and original Disney art, artifacts, and treasures from the Walt Disney Archives!”

The current street date is October 2nd, 2018.

Windows on Disney’s Main Street, U.S.A.: Stories of the Talented People Honored at the Disney Parks by Chuck Snyder was supposed to come out in 2017, but is now scheduled for this fall. This is an expanded version of a book published in 2009.

The current street date is October 9th, 2018.

Schoolhouse Rock 45th Anniversary doesn’t have a photo yet or much information (I will add that at a later date), it also is targeted for ages 8-12 – but that is my childhood, I turn 52 this year and grew up on Schoolhouse Rock. So I look forward to it! The street date is currently October 23rd, 2018.

Practically Poppins in Every Way: A Magical Carpetbag of Countless Wonders (Disney Editions Deluxe (Film)) also does not yet have a photo and I will add it at a later date. It is the third book by Jeff Kurtti for 2018. “Practically Poppins in Every Way is sumptuous, colorful, and remarkable celebration of Mary Poppins in her many incarnations, and a colorful and lavish showcase of the varied art and creative forces who have brought her to life, generation after generation.” Street date is currently November 13th, 2018.

I love “The Art of” books, and the newest one coming is The Art of Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2. The cover is not final and I will swap that out when it is. This is the second “The Art of” Disney book for this year from Chronicle, with the first being The Art of Incredibles 2.

The current street date is October 30th, 2018.

Matthew Reinhart’s newest pop-up book is based on the 25th anniversary of The Nightmare Before Christmas. Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas Pop-Up: A Petrifying Pop-Up for the Holidays is “a celebration marking the twenty-fifth anniversary of the groundbreaking movie, this is the perfect item for avid The Nightmare Before Christmas fans, holiday ghouls, and undead merrymakers alike.”

The current street date is October 2nd, 2018.

There are several TASCHEN Disney related books coming out this year, and this one is Walt Disney’s Mickey Mouse: The Complete History. This is just one of a number of books coming out for Mickey’s 90th birthday and is by Daniel Kothenschulte. It is scheduled to drop November 7th, 2018. “Celebrate Mickey’s complete legacy with volume two of one of the most expansive illustrated publications on the Disney universe: 1,500 images such as behind-the-scenes shots and rare animation sketches salute the art behind all of Mickey’s 121 cartoons, his timeless comic adventures, and the world of Mickey merchandise and memorabilia. The landmark volume also spans the legendary Mickey Mouse Club as well as unfinished projects.”
